The Department of Physics and Astronomy is the largest academic department at Rice. Our community includes 35 primary tenure-track faculty and a number of joint appointees, bringing the total of research-active affiliated faculty close to 50. In addition, the research activities of the Department are supported by a number of research scientists and postdoctoral fellows, who engage closely with our faculty and student researchers. At any time there are over 100 graduate students in our doctoral program, and we also encourage our undergraduates to avail themselves of the opportunity to get involved in cutting-edge research. The whole enterprise is supported by an excellent departmental staff.
